Understanding Your Mental Health What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a problem that some people develop after either directly experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, like a car accident, sexual assault, natural disasters, combat, or a crime event, etc. Understanding the signs, symptoms, causes, and how to deal with PTSD is the first step to overcoming the problem.

Signs & Symptoms of PTSD

  • High levels of anxiety or panic

  • Having recurrent nightmares

  • Having “Flashbacks” where you feel/think the traumatic event is happening in the here and now.

  • Physical symptoms of panic, increased heart rate, muscle tension, sweating, etc. when reminded of the event.

  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep or insomnia

  • Hypervigilance—feeling constantly on guard or like there is a perpetual feeling of danger

  • Avoiding thoughts, feelings, or conversations about the traumatic event

  • A loss of interest in things that once felt important to you

  • Having trouble in relationships and positive feelings such as joy, happiness, or love

  • Irritability
